Spotlight on U (Teachers)

Paula Morales, Western Union Elementary

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I teach Kindergarten DLI (dual language immersion). I was not really sure what path to follow once I finished high school. Ever since I can remember, I have always been teaching others, leading games and volunteering with kids.

What is your favorite memory from your teaching career?

One of my favorite moments is when students realize that they are able to read, which usually goes with the "Wait a minute, I can read" statement and a big proud laugh after that.

I really enjoy seeing the reactions of the kids when I explain to them the fact that when the United States is in summer, it's winter in Chile!

What's one piece of advice you'd give to aspiring teachers?

Being an educator requires 100 percent of your heart. You need to be sure that you're ready to commit while you are at school, but also when you go home, you will be thinking of your students, and you will put everything in place to help them succeed. Being a teacher is a hard role, but very rewarding too. If you are ready, go for it; you will impact lives for sure!

Describe your most creative lesson plan. How did you make the topic fun for students?

Back when I was in Chile, we had a unit called "traveling around the world." Students prepared their suitcases and each class chose one iconic city to visit. Ours was New York City. We spent three weeks learning and preparing for that special trip. We had our own Statue of Liberty in the class. Students were so engaged and they were able to learn and recall different facts. It was truly the power of meaningful experiences for everlasting memories.

I also love to share about the Chilean culture with my class. We cook, we dance, we sing, and we video conference with Chilean students and they get the chance to be embed themselves in culture.

What do you do for fun in your free time (outside of teaching)?

I enjoy going to the gym, finding new cute coffee shops, being outdoors, and I love to spend time with my family and my pug.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Probably cloning myself so I can do all things and save time.

What is your favorite season and what do you enjoy doing during that season?

Fall! It is so beautiful—the tree colors are so spectacular.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

We are together for seven hours every day. First and foremost, we need to learn how to live in our class community. Being kind and respectful, trusting each other and thankful for what we have. We still need to do our best and work hard, but first things first.
