Spotlight on U (Teachers)

What do you teach and why did you become a teacher?

I teach apparel and textiles, interior design and child development in the Career and Technical Education department at Sun Valley High. Before entering public education, I spent 23 years as a fashion designer in New York City. After relocating to Union County, I discovered the strong presence of design programs in UCPS high schools. Inspired to share my industry experience with students, I transitioned into teaching. In June 2025, after 3.5 years of dedication, I proudly completed all requirements to become a certified Family and Consumer Science (FACS) teacher in North Carolina.

What is your favorite memory from your teaching career?

My favorite memory from my teaching career was when a student who had studied with me and graduated returned to SVHS to see me and gave me a hug! Moments like that remind me of the impact teachers can have.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to aspiring teachers?

Be flexible, be patient and always remember why you started. The relationships you build with students will make all the challenges worthwhile.

Describe your most creative lesson plan. How did you make the topic fun for students?

In my Interior Design Mood Board lesson, students step into the role of designers for a “real” client, a fellow classmate. They review their client’s questionnaire, ask clarifying questions, and then gather images, colors and textures to create a creative and compelling digital or tactile mood board that reflects their client’s design requests and style. This hands-on project combines creativity with real-world design skills, and students love presenting their ideas to each other—making the lesson both engaging and fun.

What do you do for fun in your free time (outside of teaching)?

I love decorating my home, keeping up with fashion trends and socializing with my friends. I also enjoying spending time with my family traveling and going to art museums or touring homes and historical sites.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Time travel! I’d love to see fashion and design across different eras and bring back inspiration for today.

What is your favorite season and what do you enjoy doing during that season?

Fall is my favorite season. I love the cooler weather, fall colors and decorating my home for the season. It’s also the perfect time to cook, bake, and entertain family and friends.

If you could pass on any wisdom to your students, what would you share?

Never underestimate your creativity. The skills you’re learning now, whether in design, problem-solving, or communication, can take you in directions you may not even imagine yet.
