Spotlight on U (Staff)

What is your current role and why did you choose it?

I was recently named principal of Poplin Elementary! I actually never imagined that I would become a principal. I wanted to be a teacher ever since I was little, and when I entered the classroom, I truly thought that was what I would do for my entire career. However, as I began taking on more leadership opportunities, I realized how much I enjoyed supporting not only students, but also the teachers and staff who make such a difference in their lives every day. This role gives me the opportunity to do just that.

What’s your favorite thing about your current job?

I'm brand new to this role, but my favorite part so far has been meeting with staff and community members over the summer and getting to know what they love most about Poplin. Those conversations were the highlight of my summer. It quickly became clear that the people and community are the heart of this school. So many people have shared that Poplin feels like home, and after spending time here, I couldn't agree more. 

What is your favorite UCPS memory?

My favorite memories are when I run into students that I’ve taught in the past, and they run up and give me a hug and share how our time together impacted them. Some of them have even shared that I’m the reason they want to be a teacher in the future, which is the best feeling! 

What's your "superpower" at work (the thing you’re known for)?

I'd like to think I'm known for listening. I love hearing people's stories, learning what motivates them and helping them feel heard. I believe listening is one of the most important parts of leadership.

Outside of your job, what are your hobbies or interests?

I love traveling and experiencing new places, spending time outdoors, reading, decorating and making memories with my family and friends. I am also passionate about health and fitness!

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

I would love to have dinner with my grandfather, whom I never met because he passed away before I was born. My mom tells me so many stories about him. I would love to get to know him and hear him tell stories about my mom when she was little.

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited? What did you like about it?

One of my favorite places I've visited was Portugal. I loved the pace of life there. People seemed to value the little things, taking time to enjoy a meal, a conversation or a beautiful sunset. It was a great reminder to slow down and appreciate the little moments. 

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

Most people are surprised to learn that I was incredibly shy growing up. If you had told elementary-school me that I'd one day be speaking in front of hundreds of people as a principal, I never would have believed you!
