Spotlight on U (Staff)

Tina McSweeney, Marvin Ridge Middle Nurse

What is your current role and why did you choose it?

I’ve been the school nurse at Marvin Ridge Middle for nine years. It was one of the open positions when I applied and initially I chose it because at that time it was close to my home, but now I feel like Marvin Ridge Middle is my home.

What’s your favorite thing about your current job?

I absolutely love to see the growth that occurs—both mentally and physically—in our students in three short years. The confidence the students gain as they prepare for high school is amazing.

What is your favorite memory at UCPS?

My favorite memory was working at the first COVID vaccination clinic that was held for our UCPS staff members. This was during a challenging year and that day provided so much pride, happiness and hope for everyone involved.

A smiling woman sits at a cluttered desk in a nurse's office, with a bulletin board covered in papers and notices behind her.

What's your "superpower" at work (the thing you’re known for)?

I don’t know if I have a “superpower,” but I am known for the ability to stay calm during chaotic situations, listening to students' needs, and getting students to return to their classrooms. Attendance is important!

Outside of your job, what are your hobbies or interests?

I keep busy sewing/quilting, embroidering, crocheting, and most recently, knitting. I also enjoy gardening, birding, hiking and reading.

If you could have dinner with anyone, who would it be and why?

I know this isn’t the answer that is expected, but my answer is my family. My children are grown and two of them are in other states—Connecticut and California—and we just don’t get together as a family often enough. I miss family time.

What’s the coolest place you’ve ever visited? What did you like about it?

I’ve enjoyed national parks and beaches and have traveled to many cities in the U.S., but I think the “coolest” place is in my future, as I hope to travel in retirement.

What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?

Prior to nursing school, I was a licensed cosmetologist. I was fast-rolling perm rods!
