Making their mark: UCPS 2026-2027 Beginning Teacher finalists announced

On March 4, district leadership from Union County Public Schools (UCPS) surprised five educators in their classrooms, announcing that they had been named finalists for the 2026 Beginning Teacher of the Year award. The award recognizes teachers in their first through third year of teaching who exemplify the best of early-career educators: passionate, dedicated and student-focused.

Meagan Frost – Marvin Elementary School

Frost quietly received the exciting news without disrupting her students.

“I feel super excited,” she shared. “I feel so lucky to work in this county and to do the job I get to do every day.”

A UCPS graduate and CBSS (Communication Behavior Social Skills) teacher, Frost earned her special education degree from Appalachian State University and recently received her North Carolina teaching license. Inspired by her brother and the educators who shaped his journey, she believes every student has something valuable to contribute. In her classroom, Frost uses structured routines, positive reinforcement, and evidence-based strategies, collaborating closely with therapists and instructional assistants. Her mission extends beyond academics, empowering families and helping every learner build confidence.

Gabriella Anne Paonessa – Sun Valley Middle School

Paonessa was caught completely off guard by the announcement.

“I’m very overwhelmed. I did not expect this,” she said. “I feel so honored to be nominated, and I love my kids.”

Paonessa teaches eighth-grade English Language Arts and AIG English I. A graduate of Appalachian State University and her school’s Beginning Teacher of the Year, she draws on her personal experience with dyslexia and a speech impediment to support struggling learners. She emphasizes Universal Design for Learning, small-group collaboration, and purposeful scaffolding. Paonessa also teaches students to use technology as a resource, not a replacement, with the goal of removing barriers, building confidence, and helping every student succeed.

Laikyn Tyson – Poplin Elementary School

Tyson was conducting an outdoor class when she was surprised.

“I feel so excited, so undeserving,” she said. “I’m blessed with my class, my school, and all the support we have.”

A UCPS graduate and North Carolina State University alumna, Tyson teaches fifth grade with optimism and high expectations. Her classroom includes morning meetings to build community, inquiry-based learning, and strategies that challenge students while fostering responsibility, communication, and digital awareness. For Tyson, teaching is more than a job; it’s a calling.

Emma Laws – Porter Ridge Middle School

The image shows a young woman with long, wavy blonde hair and a warm, friendly smile, set against a dark background.

Midway through a lesson, Laws looked up as district leaders entered with a surprise announcement.

“I just feel so good,” she said. “It’s been amazing meeting students and growing as a teacher and individual.”

A Michigan State University graduate, Laws holds teaching certificates for grades 7–12 in Michigan and North Carolina. She emphasizes hands-on learning, collaboration, and student autonomy. From minibike projects to discussions about games and sports, she engages students while building belonging and pride. Beyond the classroom, Laws connects with students through sporting events, Saturday Success Sessions, and consistent support throughout the school.

April Knight – East Union Middle School

The image shows a smiling woman with blonde, wavy hair wearing a bright pink blazer and a white top, standing in front of a dark background.

Knight was teaching when district leadership walked in to share the news, prompting her students to erupt in cheers.

“It’s super exciting,” she said. “I come from a hairstylist background, and now I can give back to the same school I attended. Everything I set out to do, I’m making happen.”

Knight earned her education degree after a successful career in hairstyling. Inspired by a longtime mentor, she emphasizes relationships, confidence, and curiosity in her classroom. Her unique background allows her to connect with students personally while modeling dedication, resilience, and lifelong learning.

These five teachers have already made a strong impact in their classrooms and the winner will be announced at the U Awards on May 7. Stay tuned!
