Exploring Pre-K options: Finding the right fit for your child

UCPS offers several high-quality Pre-K programs designed to meet the diverse needs of young learners. Because there is no single general preschool enrollment, each program has specific eligibility guidelines. Applications open Feb. 2, and families are encouraged to review options carefully.

Four Pre-K pathways

Title I Pre-K
This free, full-day program serves qualifying four-year-olds through a play-based, strengths-focused approach. Classes are small, supporting individualized learning. Children must be four by August 31 and demonstrate need through a state-approved assessment. Applications are accepted Feb. 2 through March 20.

NC Pre-K
NC Pre-K is a no-cost, state-supported program for eligible four-year-olds, with a focus on academic and social-emotional development. Families earning less than 75% of the state median income may qualify. UCPS partners with the Alliance for Children to offer this program at select sites.

Pre-K Peer Pals
This inclusive option brings together children with and without special needs in select elementary schools. Children must be three or four years old, fully potty-trained, and demonstrate age-appropriate social and communication skills. A monthly fee applies, and families provide transportation.

Exceptional Children Preschool
Designed for children ages three to five with identified disabilities, this free program offers specialized instruction based on Individualized Education Program (IEP) team decisions.

Parent information sessions

To support families, UCPS will host three Pre-K Parent Information Sessions where staff can answer questions and help complete applications. Families should bring proof of address and a child’s birth certificate.
