Exceptional Children's School Social Work
EC Social Workers support Union County Public Schools by strengthening the home/school/community partnership and addressing barriers to student learning.
Direct Services provided for students with disabilities and their families:
- IEP team participant
- Liaison for school/family with various agencies (i.e. Partners Behavioral Health, CAP-C, and CAP-AD, Respite Care Provider, etc.)
- Assess and address the needs of families
- Home visits/phone contact as needed with the purpose of encouraging parents’ involvement/attendance in the IEP process, student attendance issues, clarifying special education procedures, assessing medical/mental health needs/referrals, supplying resources for failed vision hearing screenings, connecting families to community resources
- Assist parents with accessing programs/services available to students with special needs
- Assist parents with outside placements and serve as agency representative. Provide requested information to parents concerning various programs in N.C.
- Provide case management for students and families requiring multiple resources
- Assist families with obtaining legal guardianship for students attaining the age of 18
- Make referrals to community agencies, advocate with agencies on behalf of students and families, follow up as needed
- Consultation and collaboration on behalf of students and families within the EC Department and with other school staff
- Provide staff with essential information to better understand factors (societal, economic, cultural, familial, health, etc.) affecting a student’s performance and behavior
- Develop staff in-service trainings
- Coordinate 4-H club-sponsored holiday parties, Operation Arc Angel wish lists, and nominations
