Students should discuss online learning options with their counselor during registration (and rising freshman during spring registration meetings with the high school). Guidance counselors will register students based on the student's plan and request the registration. 

Online learning courses are not self-paced overall, though there is often room for flexibility during weeks or units. Students must work daily in their courses. Assignments and modules have deadlines that are clearly communicated in online courses. 

College Prep, Honors, and Advanced Placement (AP) level courses are all offered online.  Students should discuss the best level choice of courses with their guidance counselor.

E-Learning courses can be taken as a pass/fail course if the request meets the requirements stated in the high school Program of Studies. A summer course taken pass/fail belongs to the next school year.

If courses are offered in both places, guidance will register students on UCVirtual. 

Students can take online courses over and above their regular school day. In order to be successful, a student needs consistent internet access. 

Online classes taken during the school day are taken in an online learning lab, supervised by a Lab Facilitator. Lab facilitators support students in their online learning and are excellent resources. 

Successful online learners are motivated, organized, and comfortable reaching out to their teacher when there are questions. Having internet access at home is highly beneficial to the student.

The end of drop/add during the semester is day 10 for both NCVPS and UCVirtual courses. However, schools sometimes have policies shorter than this, so it is important to be aware of your school's policy. In the summer, the add period is shorter, at 5 days, but the drop period remains 10 days. 

UCVirtual courses are located in Canvas. Students can access their Canvas account through their NC EdCloud.

Yes. UCVirtual grades will appear on the report card each term. Each six weeks grade counts for 25% and the final counts for 25%. 

A student can pull up his/her grades to show his/her parent at any time. Progress reports are sent to lab facilitators at the midpoint of every six weeks and grades are on report cards.

The UCVirtual calendar matches the traditional UCPS calendar. The first day of the semester is the first day of instruction. The last day of instruction is the final day before exams, then students take a final exam during exam week.

Yes. Please consult the program of studies for any applicable pre-requisites.  

UCVirtual final exams are given at the school during exam week and are run through the testing coordinator.

Students should reach out to their online teacher first.  Lab facilitators can also be a support with planning out daily work, technical issues, and getting plugged into tutoring options at the school.

Teachers are expected to return communication within 24 hours during the work week. That means an email to a teacher on Friday afternoon would be returned no later than Monday at the same time. On-time assignment submissions must be graded within 48 hours. Assignments turned in as make-up work may be graded later. If you have concerns, please reach out to your student's teacher.

School year courses from fall 2015 and beyond are approved by the NCAA. Summer courses are not approved by NCAA clearinghouse. Student-athletes should take summer courses thru NCVPS.

NCVPS courses are housed in Moodle, Blackboard, or Canvas. Schools will provide information to students as to where their course is located, but this information is also in the course catalog at ncvps.org.

Students should reach out to their teacher first.  Lab facilitators can also be a support with planning out daily work, technical issues, and getting plugged into tutoring options at the school. NCVPS also has peer tutoring options for many courses.

A grade will be listed on the report card at the end of the semester for semester courses or year for year-long courses.  NCVPS will report a cumulative progress report every two-weeks. The lab facilitator at the school is able to print these reports and distribute to the student.

NCVPS semester courses are weighted 80% for the coursework and 20% for the final exam.

Parents can now download the Canvas Parent app in both the iTunes and Google Play stores. Parents will need student login information to set up their parent accounts. This will have to come from the school. NCVPS cannot supply login credentials to parents or facilitators. Check with your school's e-learning advisor (ELA). The Canvas Parent app is designed to provide visibility into a student's progress at a glance. Canvas Parent allows both parents and facilitators to:

• Set grade alerts
• View course announcements
